Why this quality rating

Chile has one of the stronger public education systems in Latin America, but quality varies widely by region. Bilingual public schooling is rare; private and international schools serve expat families well in Santiago.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families can enroll in public schools, but instruction is almost entirely in Spanish and the path is language-heavy for non-Spanish-speaking children.

📋 Homeschooling

Legal with exams

Chile allows homeschooling. Students must take "exámenes libres" (free exams) annually at a recognized school to validate their progress. No mandatory registration or curriculum requirements.

About Valparaíso

Valparaiso is a major port city on the Pacific coast of central Chile, located about 120 kilometers northwest of Santiago. It is the seat of the Chilean National Congress, the country's principal cargo and cruise port, and a city famous for its steep hills, funicular ascensores, and UNESCO-listed historic quarter. The local economy combines port logistics, naval headquarters, several universities, and a creative-services and tourism layer tied to the Pacific coast. The climate is hot-summer Mediterranean with cool wet winters and mild dry summers. For relocation, Valparaiso offers direct buses and Metro Valparaiso commuter rail to Vina del Mar, lower rents than Santiago, and ocean access at the trade-off of seismic risk and steep terrain.

Temperate ocean climate, cool and misty year-round with minimal rainInternet variable: reliable in centro but spotty in hills, suitable for asynchronous workGrowing expat community clustered in Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción neighborhoodsHighly walkable within hillside neighborhoods but steep terrain physically demandingExceptional seafood and Maipo Valley wine access, vibrant street food cultureActive nightlife with live music venues and bohemian bars, especially on weekendsLimited coworking spaces but cafés work for digital nomadsModerate street crime (pickpocketing) requires vigilance, generally safe in expat areas
