About Puerto Montt
Puerto Montt is the capital of Los Lagos Region and the principal gateway to Chilean Patagonia, sitting on the Reloncaví Sound at the northern end of the country's labyrinth of southern fjords about 1,000 kilometers south of Santiago. The city is the southern terminus of Chile's Pan-American Highway and the main port for the salmon-farming industry that has made the Los Lagos region one of the world's largest salmon producers. The economy combines salmon and shellfish aquaculture, fisheries, regional administration, and tourism logistics for Chiloé Island and the Carretera Austral. Climate is oceanic with cool wet conditions year round and abundant rainfall. Spanish is the language and the Chilean peso the currency. El Tepual Airport, the Navimag ferry network, and Highway 5 anchor connectivity. Relocation interest centers on Patagonian access and aquaculture employment.
