About Rancagua
Rancagua sits in central Chile about 85 kilometers south of Santiago in the O'Higgins Region, of which it is the capital. The city of about 213,000 anchors a mining-and-agriculture corridor. Codelco's El Teniente, the world's largest underground copper mine, sits in the Andes about 40 kilometers east, and the surrounding Cachapoal Valley is one of Chile's main wine regions. The semi-arid climate brings dry hot summers and cool wet winters, with Andean rain shadow effects. Spanish is essential; English is limited to mining-company offices. Rancagua offers significantly cheaper housing than Santiago while sitting on the Pan-American highway and Metrotrén commuter rail that put central Santiago within roughly 90 minutes, making it a practical base for mining engineers, agricultural managers, and Santiago commuters.
