About Herāt
Herat is a city in western Afghanistan with roughly 574,000 residents, located in the fertile Hari River valley near the Iranian border and historically a major Silk Road trading center. The local economy combines cross-border trade with Iran (the Islam Qala border crossing is one of Afghanistan's most active land ports), agriculture from the surrounding plain, traditional handicrafts including blue tilework and carpets, and remittances. Persian (Dari) is the dominant language locally. The climate is hot semi-arid with hot, dry summers, cold winters, and persistent strong seasonal winds known as the bad-e sad-o-bist roz. Relocators must weigh the defining constraint: since the Taliban takeover in 2021, Afghanistan operates under a regime that severely restricts women's education and employment, faces international sanctions, has minimal Western consular presence, and is broadly closed to standard foreign relocation outside specific humanitarian and journalistic roles.
