About Balkh

Balkh is a historic town in Balkh province in northern Afghanistan, about 20 kilometers northwest of the much larger provincial capital Mazar-i-Sharif. The roughly 115,000 residents live in what was once one of the great cities of the ancient and medieval Islamic world, the capital of Bactria and a major Silk Road node, now reduced to a smaller agricultural and administrative town inside surviving stretches of mud-brick wall. The local economy depends on irrigated cotton, wheat, and fruit farming on the surrounding plain, plus small-scale trade. Dari and Uzbek are the dominant languages. The climate is hot semi-arid with very hot summers and cold winters. Since 2021 the Taliban government has reshaped daily life, particularly for women's education and employment, and Afghanistan's banking and visa systems remain heavily constrained by international sanctions. Security and basic services are primary considerations.
