About Epworth

Epworth is a high-density satellite township about 15 kilometers southeast of central Harare, Zimbabwe, with about 206,000 residents. It originated as a Methodist mission farm in the 1890s and grew through the 1980s and 1990s as informal settlement on subdivided plots, which gives it the country's largest unplanned urban footprint with very limited piped water, sewerage, or paved roads. The economy is overwhelmingly informal, with stone carving, small trade, and daily commuter labor into Harare; Domboshava-area granite outcrops also draw cement and quarrying work. Shona is the dominant daily language alongside English, the official administrative language. The high-veld elevation of about 1,500 meters gives Harare and Epworth a mild subtropical climate with cool, dry winters and warm, wet summers. Commodity-broker minibus taxis are the dominant transport mode to the capital.
