Why this quality rating
Sri Lanka has high literacy rates and a functioning public school system, but quality is uneven. Instruction is mainly in Sinhala or Tamil. Colombo has a growing set of international schools targeting expat families.
Why the expat-access rating looks like this
Resident foreign families can technically access public schools, but the language of instruction (Sinhala or Tamil) makes it impractical for most international families without deep language integration.
โ Homeschooling
Not specifically regulatedSri Lanka requires compulsory education but does not specifically address homeschooling. Some expat families homeschool in Colombo and southern coastal areas.

Getting Around
The concrete mobility picture for Kandy: airport access, urban transit, and rideshare practicality.
Airport
Bandaranaike airport and hill-country rail access
The checked-in Sri Lanka family coverage frontier keeps Kandy as a high-priority follow-up after Colombo, with practical air access still flowing through Bandaranaike plus the hill-country rail and road corridor.
Urban transit
Bus, rail, and compact-center walking
Kandy has a compact core and rail station that make some daily errands workable on foot or by train, but most wider family movement remains bus- and tuk-tuk-led.
Rideshare
PickMe and taxi coverage
PickMe and taxis are practical fallbacks for hillier routes, station transfers, and trips when bus links are too indirect.

About Kandy
Kandy is the second city of Sri Lanka and the cultural capital of the Sinhalese highlands, sitting at around 500 meters elevation about 115 kilometers east of Colombo in the central hill country. The roughly 112,000 residents in the urban core live around the UNESCO-listed Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the most important Buddhist pilgrimage site on the island, and the surrounding Kandy Lake. The economy combines tourism, the surrounding tea estates of the hill country, and the University of Peradeniya immediately west, Sri Lanka's largest. Climate is mild year-round thanks to the elevation, with two monsoon seasons. Sinhala is dominant locally and English is widely used in tourism and university settings. The Colombo road and rail link, while scenic, is slow at four to five hours.
