Why this quality rating
Sri Lanka has high literacy rates and a functioning public school system, but quality is uneven. Instruction is mainly in Sinhala or Tamil. Colombo has a growing set of international schools targeting expat families.
Why the expat-access rating looks like this
Resident foreign families can technically access public schools, but the language of instruction (Sinhala or Tamil) makes it impractical for most international families without deep language integration.
โ Homeschooling
Not specifically regulatedSri Lanka requires compulsory education but does not specifically address homeschooling. Some expat families homeschool in Colombo and southern coastal areas.

About Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia
Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia is a coastal city in Sri Lanka's Colombo District, sitting immediately south of Colombo and effectively forming the capital's southern suburban extension along the Indian Ocean. The city is notable for the National Zoological Gardens at Dehiwala and the Mount Lavinia Hotel, a colonial-era landmark built originally as a British governor's residence in the 1800s. The local economy is integrated with Colombo's, combining residential housing for Colombo commuters, beach tourism along the southern stretch, and supporting services. Sinhala and Tamil are both official with English widely used in business and education. The climate is tropical with consistent warm temperatures year-round and two monsoon seasons. The Colombo coastal rail line runs through the city directly, putting central Colombo within 20 minutes and providing onward connections south to Galle and Matara along the coast.
