About Dunedin
Dunedin is the principal city of Otago on the southeast coast of New Zealand's South Island, sitting at the head of Otago Harbour. Its roughly 132,000 residents live in a city whose Scottish-settler heritage shaped much of the 19th-century stone architecture and street naming, and whose economy is built around the University of Otago (New Zealand's oldest), the associated medical school and teaching hospital, and the Port of Otago at Port Chalmers. English is universal. The climate is temperate oceanic with cool changeable summers, cold winters with occasional snow, and frequent harbor wind. Christchurch is reachable in roughly six hours by road or under an hour by domestic flight. Dunedin offers genuine small-city South Island living at lower housing costs than Auckland or Wellington.
