Why this quality rating

The Netherlands has a strong public-school system and a real resident-schooling path, especially for families staying long enough to integrate.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families can generally enroll, and newcomer support exists in some places, but the long-term public path still depends on Dutch.

โš ๏ธ Homeschooling

Legal with strict exemptions only

Dutch law requires school attendance. Exemptions exist for religious/philosophical objections (Article 5a) or if no suitable school exists within travel distance. Lifestyle or pedagogical preference is not sufficient grounds. Most worldschooling families cannot legally homeschool in the Netherlands.

About Almere Stad

Almere Stad is the central district of Almere, a planned city in the Netherlands built from scratch on land reclaimed from the IJsselmeer in the 1970s. It sits in Flevoland province about 25 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal, making it a recognized commuter base for people priced out of the capital. The city is unusual in the Dutch context for its modernist architecture, wide cycling infrastructure laid out before construction, and complete separation of car and bike traffic. Dutch is the official language but English is widely spoken, the climate is mild maritime, and EU citizens face no residency restrictions when relocating for work.
