About Bergamo

Bergamo sits in Lombardy, northern Italy, at the foot of the Bergamasque Alps about 50 kilometers northeast of Milan. The city is unusually split between a walled hilltop Citta Alta of medieval and Venetian-era construction and a planned nineteenth- and twentieth-century Citta Bassa on the plain, connected by a funicular. The economy combines manufacturing, particularly in mechanical components and textiles for the Milanese supply chain, and finance, with major banking groups headquartered locally. Orio al Serio International Airport is the third-busiest in Italy and a key Ryanair base for northern Italy. Climate is humid subtropical with cold damp winters and hot summers. Italian is universal, with Bergamasque dialect persisting and English widely used in business. Direct trains reach Milan in under an hour.
