Why this quality rating

Spain’s public schools are broadly solid, with stronger outcomes in some regions than others.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families can use public schools, but the classroom language will be Spanish and sometimes a regional language like Catalan or Valencian.

Homeschooling

Legal gray area

Spain does not explicitly prohibit or regulate homeschooling. The constitution guarantees education but does not require school attendance. Some regions are more tolerant than others. Catalonia and Andalusia have growing communities. Court rulings have generally been sympathetic but no clear legal framework exists.

Sparse pricing does not imply sparse healthcare availability.

About Oviedo

Oviedo is the capital of the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain, sitting in a green valley between the Cantabrian mountains and the Bay of Biscay roughly 30 kilometers inland from the coastal city of Gijón. The historic core preserves a substantial collection of pre-Romanesque Asturian architecture dating to the 9th century, recognized collectively as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The local economy combines administration, the University of Oviedo, regional services, and the broader Asturian industrial base in steel and food production concentrated around Gijón and Avilés. Spanish is universal with Asturian recognized as a co-official regional language. The climate is oceanic with mild wet winters and cool damp summers, dramatically different from interior Spain. Direct trains connect Oviedo to Madrid in roughly three and a half hours, and Asturias Airport provides regional and European flights.
