About Georgetown

Georgetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana, sitting on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Demerara River on the northeastern shoulder of South America. The city of around 235,000 is unusual in the Western Hemisphere: English-speaking with strong Caribbean cultural ties despite its South American geography, with a population descended primarily from indentured Indian, African, and Indigenous Amerindian heritage. Much of the city sits below sea level and depends on a colonial-era Dutch seawall and drainage system. The economy has been radically transformed by ExxonMobil's offshore Stabroek Block, which has made Guyana one of the world's fastest-growing economies through the early 2020s and is reshaping Georgetown's labor market, real estate, and infrastructure pipeline. The climate is tropical with two wet seasons. Relocation interest is overwhelmingly oil-and-gas and adjacent professional services.
