About Siguiri
Siguiri is a town in Upper Guinea in northeastern Guinea, set on the Niger River near the borders with Mali and Côte d'Ivoire about eight hundred kilometers from the Atlantic capital Conakry. Its population of around 148,000 supports an economy built principally on industrial and artisanal gold mining, with the Société Ag d'Exploitation de Siguiri (SAG) operating one of West Africa's larger open-pit gold mines in the surrounding area. Subsistence farming and Niger River trade fill out the rest of local activity. Malinké and French dominate alongside other Manding languages. The Sahelian climate produces a hot dry season and a clear rainy season from June to October. For relocators, Siguiri is a working West African mining town with thin urban infrastructure outside the mining operations themselves.
