About Praia

Praia is the capital and largest city of Cape Verde, located on the southern coast of Santiago Island. As the political, administrative and economic center of an archipelagic nation, it concentrates national government, the largest port and international airport in the country, and a substantial share of services, finance and trade that link Cape Verde to West Africa and the Portuguese-speaking Atlantic. Plateau, the colonial-era core perched on a flat-topped bluff above the harbor, anchors the historic city, while newer residential and commercial districts spread inland. Portuguese is the official language with Cape Verdean Creole in daily life. For foreign relocators, Praia hosts a modest expat and diaspora community. Climate is hot semi-arid with a short, unreliable rainy season from August through October.

Tropical desert climate: dry year-round, harmattan dust storms Dec-MarInternet reliable but limited: 5-15 Mbps fixed broadband, $30-50/monthGrowing but small expat community: ~5,000-10,000 mostly from Europe and NGO sectorsModerate walkability: central areas walkable but spread out, cheap minibuses and taxis availableSeafood-focused food scene: cheap local ($3-8 meals), improving international optionsModest nightlife: beach clubs with live music, venues close early, relaxed vibe over clubbingLimited coworking: few spaces available, $200-400/month, many work from cafesVery safe: petty theft possible but violent crime rare, generally comfortable for expats
