About Maroua

Maroua is the capital of the Far North Region of Cameroon, near the borders with Nigeria, Chad, and the Mandara Mountains. It is the largest city in the country's Sahelian north and historically a commercial hub for trans-Saharan and cross-border trade, with cotton, leather, and livestock at the center of the local economy. French is the official administrative language alongside Fulfulde as the regional lingua franca. The climate is hot semi-arid with a short rainy season from June to September and very hot dry conditions otherwise. The wider Far North region has faced sustained Boko Haram insurgency since the mid-2010s, and Western governments advise against non-essential travel; relocation is effectively limited to humanitarian and diplomatic mandates.
