Why this quality rating

The United States has many excellent public schools, but quality varies sharply by district and neighborhood.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families can use local public schools, but school quality depends heavily on district assignment and housing location.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Homeschooling

Varies by state

Homeschooling is legal in all 50 US states but regulations vary dramatically. Some states (TX, AK, ID) have minimal oversight; others (NY, PA, MA) require notification, testing, and curriculum approval. Most worldschooling families establish residency in low-regulation states.

Healthcare

System strength, outcome signals, facility coverage, and self-pay visibility in United States.

Method: country metrics come from public system indicators, facility coverage reflects mapped providers we can inventory, direct pricing only reflects observed self-pay pages, and relative care cost can fall back to broad cost-of-living healthcare indices. Sparse pricing does not imply sparse healthcare availability.

About Rochester, NY

Rochester sits on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in western New York state, United States, about 110 kilometers east of Buffalo. The city of about 210,000 was historically built around Eastman Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb, once a global imaging and optics capital, and has since transitioned into an economy anchored by the University of Rochester and its medical center, optics and photonics research at the institute that bears the city's name, and food and beverage manufacturing. The humid continental climate brings cold snowy winters with significant lake-effect snow and warm summers. English is universal. Rochester offers among the lowest housing costs of any U.S. metro of its size, a strong concentration of research and medical employment, easy access to the Finger Lakes wine region, and short drives to Toronto via the Lewiston-Queenston bridge.
