Why this quality rating

The United States has many excellent public schools, but quality varies sharply by district and neighborhood.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families can use local public schools, but school quality depends heavily on district assignment and housing location.

🗺️ Homeschooling

Varies by state

Homeschooling is legal in all 50 US states but regulations vary dramatically. Some states (TX, AK, ID) have minimal oversight; others (NY, PA, MA) require notification, testing, and curriculum approval. Most worldschooling families establish residency in low-regulation states.

bus

CARTA makes core trips workable around downtown, the airport, and nearby commuter corridors, but most family mobility in greater Charleston still remains car-led.

Rideshare

Uber and Lyft available

Ride-hailing is a routine fallback for airport transfers, beach-area trips, and first/last-mile gaps beyond the bus network.

Healthcare

System strength, outcome signals, facility coverage, and self-pay visibility in United States.

Method: country metrics come from public system indicators, facility coverage reflects mapped providers we can inventory, direct pricing only reflects observed self-pay pages, and relative care cost can fall back to broad cost-of-living healthcare indices. Sparse pricing does not imply sparse healthcare availability.

Public care

Good

Broad public coverage and relatively low patient cost-sharing help, but the tracked facility mix leans away from public providers.

Private care

Limited

A clearly private facility base help, but the tracked private-style network still looks thin and self-pay pricing transparency is still sparse.

About Charleston, SC

Charleston is a historic port city on the South Carolina coast of the United States, sitting at the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers where they form Charleston Harbor. Its roughly 133,000 city residents live in one of America's most architecturally preserved colonial-era cities, with the local economy combining the Port of Charleston (one of the largest container ports on the U.S. East Coast), Boeing's 787 final assembly plant in North Charleston, the Medical University of South Carolina, and tourism. English is universal. The climate is humid subtropical with hot humid summers, mild winters, and serious hurricane exposure from August through October. Charleston has attracted significant in-migration from higher-cost U.S. cities, driving housing prices upward at rates well above the national average.
