About Antakya
Antakya is the capital of Hatay Province in southern Turkey, sitting on the Asi (Orontes) River near the Mediterranean coast and the Syrian border, historically founded as ancient Antioch. The city was devastated by the February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, which caused catastrophic damage to housing, hospitals, and historic structures, with reconstruction still actively underway and substantial portions of the population displaced to other Turkish cities. Pre-earthquake, the economy mixed agriculture from the fertile Hatay plain, cross-border trade with Syria (now largely suspended), textiles, and a distinctive Arab-Turkish-Christian cultural environment. Relocators should treat Antakya as a city in mid-reconstruction with limited functional infrastructure in many areas; planning a move requires verification of current conditions. Turkish is essential alongside significant Arabic use in the local population.
