About Kahramanmaraş
Kahramanmaraş is the capital of Kahramanmaraş Province in southern Turkey, sitting at the foot of the Taurus Mountains in the country's transition zone between the Mediterranean and the eastern Anatolian highlands. The city was at the epicenter of the catastrophic February 2023 earthquake sequence, which caused massive destruction across southern Turkey and northern Syria, killing tens of thousands and displacing much of the city's population, with reconstruction still ongoing. Pre-earthquake, the economy was built on textiles (the city is historically known for its yarn and cotton-thread production), iron and steel, and a famous dondurma (stretchy ice cream) tradition. Relocators should treat the city as one in mid-reconstruction with limited functional housing and infrastructure in many areas; planning a move requires verification of current conditions. Turkish is essential.
