Why this quality rating

Spain’s public schools are broadly solid, with stronger outcomes in some regions than others.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families can use public schools, but the classroom language will be Spanish and sometimes a regional language like Catalan or Valencian.

Homeschooling

Legal gray area

Spain does not explicitly prohibit or regulate homeschooling. The constitution guarantees education but does not require school attendance. Some regions are more tolerant than others. Catalonia and Andalusia have growing communities. Court rulings have generally been sympathetic but no clear legal framework exists.

About Gijón

Gijon is the largest city in the autonomous community of Asturias on Spain's northern Atlantic coast, distinct from the regional capital Oviedo about 30 kilometers inland. The city built its economy around steel and shipbuilding through the twentieth century and remains home to ArcelorMittal's main Spanish integrated steelworks, alongside a significant fishing port and growing logistics activity through the expanded El Musel deep-water harbor. Castilian Spanish is universal with Asturian retained in some local usage. The oceanic climate brings cool wet winters and mild damp summers, with year-round rainfall and significantly less heat than Mediterranean Spain. Train links to Madrid via Oviedo take about four hours; the airport in Asturias serves limited European destinations. For relocators, Gijon offers an Atlantic-coast lifestyle and lower housing costs than Madrid or Barcelona.
