About Wau

Wau is the capital of Western Bahr el Ghazal State in South Sudan, sitting on the Jur River roughly 650 kilometers northwest of Juba. It is historically a colonial-era administrative center and a node on the now-largely-defunct Sudan Railways line that once linked Khartoum to the south. The local economy is built on agriculture, livestock, and a heavy NGO and UN humanitarian presence. Arabic and English are both official, with Dinka, Luo, and other local languages widely spoken. Realistically, Wau is not a general expatriate relocation destination; access is largely through humanitarian, diplomatic, or extractive-sector work, with security and infrastructure constraints throughout the country. The climate is tropical with a long rainy season from April to October, and Wau Airport offers domestic flights to Juba.
