About Malakal
Malakal lies in northeastern South Sudan on the White Nile, serving as the capital of Upper Nile State and a historic river-trade junction near the Sudanese border. It is a secondary city in a country whose economy depends heavily on oil produced in the surrounding region, and much of Malakal's recent population has been shaped by displacement from the civil conflict that began in 2013, including a long-running UN Protection of Civilians site. The climate is hot and tropical with a pronounced wet season. Infrastructure remains limited, with intermittent electricity and river transport more reliable than roads, so relocation here is realistic mainly for humanitarian, NGO, and oil-sector staff rather than independent movers.
