About Namp’o

Nampo sits on the Taedong River estuary on the west coast of North Korea, about 50 kilometers southwest of Pyongyang, and is one of the country's most important port cities. The local economy is built on the West Sea Barrage harbor, heavy industry including the historically significant Chollima Steelworks, shipbuilding, glass production at the Korea-China joint venture works, and a fishing fleet operating into the Yellow Sea. Korean is essential and external information is sharply constrained. Practical international relocation to Nampo is not realistic under the current political and sanctions regime: travel is heavily restricted to a small number of diplomats, aid workers, occasional tourists and Chinese business contacts, and any extended foreign residence operates inside the tightly controlled framework that applies to all of North Korea.
