About Haeju
Haeju is a port city on the Yellow Sea in southwestern North Korea, serving as the provincial capital of South Hwanghae and sitting roughly 100 kilometers south of Pyongyang. The city historically functioned as a regional administrative center and small naval port, with a local economy combining cement production, fishing, salt evaporation pans along the coast, and limited light manufacturing. Korean is the working language. The climate is humid continental with cold dry winters and warm humid summers, comparable to Seoul roughly 100 kilometers to the south across the demilitarized zone. As with all of North Korea, foreign relocation is not a practical option outside the narrow channels of accredited diplomatic, humanitarian aid, or specific authorized professional postings, and even those have been further restricted since the country's pandemic-era border closures.
