About Zinder

Zinder is the second-largest city in Niger and the historical capital of the Sultanate of Damagaram in the country's southeast, near the Nigerian border. The economy centers on trans-Saharan and cross-border trade with northern Nigeria, livestock, and groundnut production, supplemented by handicrafts in the old Birni quarter. Hausa is the lingua franca, with French as the official administrative language. Climate is hot semi-arid with a short rainy season from June to September. Niger's broader security situation since the 2023 coup has restricted Western diplomatic and NGO presence sharply, and most embassies advise against non-essential travel to the region. Foreign relocation outside humanitarian and diplomatic mandates is effectively impractical at present.
