About Niamey

Niamey is the capital of Niger, a Sahelian city of about 1.32 million on the Niger River in the country's southwest and the political, administrative, and commercial core of one of the world's poorest countries. The economy concentrates on government, French and Chinese mining-and-uranium services, a substantial NGO and humanitarian sector, and informal trade. Relocators should weigh that the security situation has deteriorated sharply since 2023, with Western governments now maintaining do-not-travel advisories following the military coup and the withdrawal of French and US forces; conventional professional relocation is not currently practical. The climate is hot semi-arid with extreme dry-season heat above 40 C and a short rainy season, French dominates official life alongside Hausa and Zarma, and the formal foreign presence has contracted sharply.

Extreme heat: 40°C+ summers, dust storms March-MayIntermittent internet: 3G/4G unreliable, power cuts frequentSmall expat community: mostly NGO/diplomatic workersLimited walkability: requires transport for most areasStreet food scene: excellent local cuisine, few fine dining optionsMinimal nightlife: few bars/clubs, early closing timesNo coworking spaces: work from cafés or accommodationSecurity concerns: petty theft and regional tensions, avoid night travel
