About Maradi

Maradi is the second-largest city in Niger, sitting in the agricultural Sahel belt of south-central Niger close to the Nigerian border. It is the country's primary commercial center, with an economy built on cross-border trade with northern Nigeria, livestock markets, peanut and millet processing, and significant informal currency exchange tied to the naira-CFA franc differential. The climate is hot semi-arid with extreme summer heat, a short rainy season from June through September, and a long dry harmattan period. Hausa is universal alongside French as the official language. Niger has been under military rule since the July 2023 coup, with regional sanctions and French military withdrawal reshaping security and aid presence; foreign residents are largely limited to humanitarian agencies and traders, with limited expat infrastructure.
