About Meknes
Meknes is one of Morocco's four imperial cities, a historic urban center of roughly 568,000 in the country's northern interior at the foot of the Middle Atlas Mountains about 60 kilometers west of Fez. The economy combines agriculture from the surrounding fertile plain (the region is a leading Moroccan wine and olive oil producer), tourism tied to the UNESCO-listed 17th-century medina and the nearby Roman ruins of Volubilis, agro-processing, and university employment through Moulay Ismail University. Elevation around 550 meters moderates the climate, giving hot, dry summers, cool wet winters that occasionally see frost, and modest annual rainfall. Arabic is essential, French is widely used in business and government as a colonial legacy, and English is limited outside tourism circles. Relocators should weigh good rail access to Casablanca and Rabat (under three hours on the conventional line), modest direct international flight access, and a noticeably calmer pace than Casablanca or Marrakech.
