About Zomba

Zomba is a city in southern Malawi, with a population around 120,000, located at the foot of the 2,087-meter Zomba Plateau on the southern shore of Lake Chilwa. The town served as Malawi's capital from 1891 until 1975, when administrative functions moved to Lilongwe, and retains substantial colonial-era government architecture along with the parliament building and Chancellor College, the main campus of the University of Malawi. The local economy combines higher education, the military headquarters of the Malawi Defence Force, and surrounding tea and tobacco agriculture. Chichewa and English are both widely used. Climate is subtropical highland, cooler than the Shire valley below, with a wet season from November through April. Blantyre is roughly an hour south by road; Chileka International Airport is about 90 minutes.
