Why this quality rating

Lebanon has a long-established education culture, but the public system has been under pressure from economic crisis and uneven funding. Many families who can afford it prefer private schools, especially in Beirut.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families can sometimes access public schools, but Arabic/French classroom expectations and current system strain make the public route a difficult fit for many expat households.

๐Ÿ“‹ Homeschooling

Legal with official exams

Lebanon allows homeschooling under its education law. Students must take official government exams (Brevet and Baccalaureate) to receive recognized qualifications. No mandatory registration for home study, but exam enrollment is required for certification.

About Aley

Aley sits in the Mount Lebanon Governorate of Lebanon, about 17 kilometers southeast of Beirut and 800 meters above sea level on the western slopes of the Chouf mountains. Population is roughly 130,000, and the town has historically been a summer escape for wealthy Beirutis and Gulf visitors fleeing coastal heat โ€” many traditional villas and hotels date to that era, though the Gulf tourism collapsed during Lebanon's economic crisis and never fully recovered. The area is the historic heartland of the Druze community alongside Christian and Sunni populations. Climate is Mediterranean with warm dry summers and cool wet winters that bring occasional snow. Arabic is the working language with French and English widely used. Lebanon's currency collapse since 2019 and the 2024 Israel-Hezbollah conflict have made foreign relocation effectively impossible outside diplomatic and humanitarian postings.
