Why this quality rating

Kazakhstan has a functioning state-school system with stronger options in Almaty and Astana than in smaller cities. Academic expectations can be solid, but the public route remains language-heavy and not especially tailored to expat families.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families can often enroll, but Kazakh- and Russian-medium instruction makes the public path harder for most foreign families unless they plan deeper local integration.

📋 Homeschooling

Legal with school supervision

Kazakhstan's Law on Education (2007, amended) allows home-based learning with school supervision. Students must be registered with a school and take assessments. Increasingly popular among Almaty and Nur-Sultan expats.

About Oral

Oral, also known as Uralsk, is a city in northwestern Kazakhstan, sitting on the Ural River about 200 kilometers from the Russian border with roughly 330,000 residents. Its economy is anchored by services to the surrounding Karachaganak oil and gas condensate field, one of the largest in Central Asia, alongside agriculture and regional administration for West Kazakhstan Region. Kazakh and Russian are both in daily use. The climate is sharply continental, with very cold winters and hot dry summers. Relocators are predominantly Kazakh and Russian; a modest expatriate cohort is tied to the oil and gas sector. Practical hooks are limited: the city is geographically isolated from Almaty and Astana and depends on the energy industry and cross-border trade with Russia for its labor market.
