Why this quality rating

Bulgaria has below-average PISA outcomes and significant gaps between schools in Sofia and the rest of the country. The public system is Bulgarian-medium.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident expat families can access public schools, but the Bulgarian-medium instruction and uneven quality make this a common reason to go private.

About Stara Zagora

Stara Zagora sits in central southern Bulgaria, on the northern edge of the Upper Thracian Plain at the foot of the Sredna Gora mountains. The city is one of the country's largest by population outside Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna, and its grid plan dates from the rebuilding after destruction in the 1877 Russo-Turkish War. The economy combines heavy industry, particularly the Maritsa Iztok lignite mining and power complex to the southeast, brewing, agriculture, and a growing logistics footprint along the Trakia motorway. Climate is humid continental with a Mediterranean influence, producing hot dry summers and cold winters that occasionally see snow. Bulgarian is the working language, with English use rising among younger residents. Sofia is about three hours by motorway, and Plovdiv airport is roughly an hour southwest.
