Why this quality rating
Hungary’s public schools can work for local families, but expat fit is weaker and quality feels less consistent than top-tier EU systems.
Why the expat-access rating looks like this
Resident enrollment is possible, but Hungarian-medium instruction makes the public route a hard sell for most foreign families.
📋 Homeschooling
Legal with school supervisionHomeschooling (magántanulói jogviszony) is legal. Students must be registered with a school and take exams. The student can study at home but the school provides supervision and assessment.

About Győr
Győr sits in northwestern Hungary about midway between Budapest and Vienna on the M1 motorway and direct rail corridor, the largest city of the Transdanubian region. Population is about 130,000, with a metro reaching close to 200,000. The local economy is overwhelmingly anchored by the Audi Hungaria plant — one of the world's largest engine factories, producing the bulk of Audi's engines and a significant portion of its vehicles — which has drawn German manufacturing expertise and substantial automotive supplier investment into the city. The Széchenyi István University trains the engineers who staff that ecosystem. Climate is humid continental with cold winters and warm summers. Hungarian is the working language with German common in business and a small expat community drawn by Audi. Cost of living runs well below both Budapest and Vienna, and the direct rail link to Vienna in just over an hour makes Győr an unusual cross-border commuting option.
