About Buenaventura

Buenaventura is Colombia's principal Pacific port city, sitting in Valle del Cauca department on a humid coastal plain at the mouth of the Dagua River. With around 432,000 residents, it handles a substantial share of Colombia's seaborne trade through its container terminals, with the economy heavily port-dependent and a long-standing Afro-Colombian cultural identity. Relocators should be candid about conditions: the city has persistent security challenges tied to armed groups and drug trafficking corridors, infrastructure outside the port enclave is notably underdeveloped relative to Cali, an extremely wet equatorial climate with rainfall among the heaviest in South America defines local life, and foreign presence is largely limited to shipping, logistics, and humanitarian work. The road to Cali via the Loboguerrero corridor is the main outbound link.
