About Parakou

Parakou is the third-largest city in Benin, with about 255,000 residents, sitting on the central Borgou plateau about 400 kilometres north of Cotonou. It is the principal commercial hub of northern Benin and the northern terminus of the OCBN railway from the port of Cotonou, making it a key transshipment point for goods bound for landlocked Niger to the north and Burkina Faso to the northwest. The economy combines trade and trucking, cotton ginning, textiles, and the University of Parakou. The climate is tropical savanna with a single rainy season from May to October. French is the official working language alongside Bariba, Dendi and Fon, English is limited, and housing costs are very low by international standards though infrastructure including grid electricity remains uneven.
