About Abomey-Calavi

Abomey-Calavi is a rapidly growing city in southern Benin, immediately northwest of Cotonou and effectively functioning as part of the Greater Cotonou metropolitan area along the Atlantic coast and the shore of Lake Nokoué. It is not the political capital (Porto-Novo holds that role nominally; Cotonou is the de facto economic capital), but it has absorbed much of the metro's residential growth and hosts the main campus of the Université d'Abomey-Calavi, the country's largest university. The economy mixes residential and university-driven services, small-scale industry, and Cotonou-tied employment. Relocators should weigh a hot humid tropical coastal climate, a low cost of living, and proximity to Cotonou's port and airport against stretched municipal infrastructure (drainage, power), limited international flight connectivity, and near-total reliance on French. Best suited to academic or development-sector professionals.
