Albany is the capital city of New York state in the United States, on the west bank of the Hudson River about 240 kilometres north of New York City. It is the political centre of the state, hosting the New York State Capitol, the Empire State Plaza, and the headquarters of most state agencies, and the local economy is heavily weighted toward government, health care anchored by Albany Medical Center, higher education through the University at Albany and several other institutions, and the growing nanotechnology cluster at the Albany Nanotech Complex tied to GlobalFoundries semiconductor manufacturing nearby.
