About Mary

Mary is the third-largest city in Turkmenistan, sitting in the Karakum Desert oasis along the Murghab River roughly 350 kilometers southeast of Ashgabat. Its roughly 170,000 residents live in a city whose modern economy is built around natural gas production from the surrounding Galkynysh field (one of the world's largest gas reservoirs), the Mary Combined-Cycle Power Plant, and cotton processing from the irrigated agricultural zone along the Murghab. The historic site of Merv, a major Silk Road city now in ruins, sits roughly 30 kilometers east of modern Mary. Turkmen is the official language with Russian still widely spoken in older urban contexts. The continental desert climate brings extreme summer heat and cold dry winters. Mary has a regional airport with service to Ashgabat. For relocators, the city is essentially a gas-industry posting in a country with substantial entry and travel restrictions.
