Why this quality rating

Turkey's public schools can work for local families, but expat fit is weaker and the public path is not usually the obvious choice when alternatives exist.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident enrollment is possible, but Turkish-medium instruction and uneven school quality make the public route hard for most foreign families.

🚫 Homeschooling

Homeschooling not legal

Turkey requires compulsory school attendance. Homeschooling is not permitted under current law. Foreign residents are technically subject to the same rules, though enforcement varies for non-citizens.

About Erzurum

Erzurum sits on a high plateau in eastern Turkey at about 1,900 meters elevation, serving as the regional hub for the eastern Anatolian highlands with around 768,000 residents. It has historically been a garrison town and university center, with Atatürk University as a major regional anchor, and gained ski-resort infrastructure on nearby Palandöken Mountain after hosting the 2011 Winter Universiade. Relocators face one of Turkey's harshest climates with long, snowy winters that can drop below -20C and short cool summers. Turkish is essential; English use is limited. Costs sit well below Istanbul or Antalya. The conservative social environment, harsh climate, and limited international presence make this a niche destination, mainly for academics, ski enthusiasts, or those with regional ties.
