About Nuku'alofa

Nuku'alofa is the capital of Tonga, with about 22,000 residents on the northern coast of Tongatapu, the largest island of the kingdom. The local economy combines government, port activity, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and a significant reliance on remittances from the Tongan diaspora in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Tongan and English are both official languages, with English used in government and business. The climate is tropical with a wetter warmer season from November to April that includes cyclone risk; the 2022 Hunga Tonga underwater volcanic eruption and tsunami caused significant damage and disruption. Tonga remains a constitutional monarchy with a distinct cultural and political identity. Nuku'alofa suits relocators with diplomatic, NGO, regional organization, or specific Pacific diaspora ties.
