About Kara
Kara is the second-largest city in Togo and the capital of Kara Region in the country's north, with about 104,207 residents. It sits in the savanna belt at the foot of the Kara mountains and is the home region of the long-ruling Gnassingbé political family, which has given the city an outsized share of national infrastructure investment, including a university and one of the country's main public hospitals. The local economy combines public services, regional commerce serving northern Togo, and surrounding agriculture in millet, sorghum, and yams. French is the official language with Kabiyé as the dominant local language. The climate is tropical wet and dry with a single rainy season from April to October and harmattan-influenced dry months. Foreign residency is rare.
