About Eixample
Eixample is a central district of Barcelona in Spain rather than a freestanding city, forming the planned nineteenth-century grid extension designed by Ildefons Cerda that expanded the medieval old town northward. The district contains many of Barcelona's defining modernist buildings including Gaudi's Sagrada Familia and Casa Batllo along the Passeig de Gracia, and concentrates a significant share of the city's office, retail, and high-end residential property. Spanish and Catalan are both in daily use, with English widely spoken in business and tourism. The Mediterranean climate brings hot humid summers and mild winters with limited rainfall. The Barcelona Metro and bus network is dense across Eixample with multiple lines crossing the district. Housing costs are among the highest in Spain and short-term rental restrictions have tightened.
