Why this quality rating

Spain’s public schools are broadly solid, with stronger outcomes in some regions than others.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families can use public schools, but the classroom language will be Spanish and sometimes a regional language like Catalan or Valencian.

Homeschooling

Legal gray area

Spain does not explicitly prohibit or regulate homeschooling. The constitution guarantees education but does not require school attendance. Some regions are more tolerant than others. Catalonia and Andalusia have growing communities. Court rulings have generally been sympathetic but no clear legal framework exists.

About Barakaldo

Barakaldo is a city in Biscay province in the Basque Country in northern Spain, on the left bank of the Nervión estuary directly across the river from Bilbao. It functions as part of the Greater Bilbao metropolitan area and was historically one of the most important steel and shipbuilding towns in Spain, with the Altos Hornos de Vizcaya works dominating the local economy through the 20th century. Following deindustrialisation, the city has been substantially regenerated around the Mega Park retail complex and the BEC Bilbao Exhibition Centre, and the local economy now combines services, retail, light industry, and a substantial commuter base. The Bilbao Metro Line 2 connects Barakaldo into central Bilbao in about 15 minutes. Spanish and Basque are co-official. The climate is humid oceanic with mild wet winters and warm summers.
