Why this quality rating

Spain’s public schools are broadly solid, with stronger outcomes in some regions than others.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families can use public schools, but the classroom language will be Spanish and sometimes a regional language like Catalan or Valencian.

Homeschooling

Legal gray area

Spain does not explicitly prohibit or regulate homeschooling. The constitution guarantees education but does not require school attendance. Some regions are more tolerant than others. Catalonia and Andalusia have growing communities. Court rulings have generally been sympathetic but no clear legal framework exists.

About Alcalá de Henares

Alcalá de Henares sits 35 kilometers northeast of Madrid in Spain's Comunidad de Madrid, on the Henares River along the historic road to Zaragoza. It is a UNESCO-listed university city, home to the Universidad de Alcalá founded in 1499 and birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes. Today it functions as a major commuter satellite of Madrid, with Cercanías commuter rail putting Atocha and Chamartín within 35 to 45 minutes and a substantial logistics and pharmaceutical industrial corridor along the Henares valley providing local employment. Climate is continental Mediterranean with hot dry summers and cool winters. For relocators, Alcalá offers materially lower rents than central Madrid, a walkable historic core, and a working university-and-industry economy rather than a pure dormitory town.
