About Koidu

Koidu is the urban core of Koidu New Sembehun town and the capital of Kono District in eastern Sierra Leone, set on rolling forested terrain near the Guinean border about 350 km east of Freetown. Population sits near 125,000. The economy is dominated by diamond mining, with the Koidu Limited (now Octea) kimberlite operation as the major formal employer alongside extensive small-scale alluvial digging. Climate is tropical with a heavy May-November rainy season and a dusty Harmattan-affected December-February dry period. Krio, Kono, and Mende are the daily languages, with English in administration. Road conditions on the Freetown route have improved with the rebuilt Makeni-Koidu highway but the journey still takes most of a day.
