Why this quality rating

Laos has a small, uneven public-school system that is not the route most expat families choose in Vientiane or Luang Prabang when private alternatives exist.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident families may be able to enroll, but Lao-medium instruction and uneven school quality make the public route impractical for most international families.

❓ Homeschooling

Not specifically addressed

Laos does not have specific homeschooling legislation. School attendance is compulsory for citizens, but expat families (common in Vientiane) typically homeschool without interference. No formal registration process exists for homeschoolers.

About Savannakhet

Savannakhet, formally Kaysone Phomvihane, is the capital of Savannakhet Province in central Laos, sitting on the eastern bank of the Mekong River across from Mukdahan in Thailand. It is Laos's second-largest city and a major node on the East-West Economic Corridor, with the Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge providing a direct road link to Thailand and onward to Vietnam via Route 9. The local economy mixes cross-border trade, agriculture, and small-scale manufacturing. Lao is essential with Thai widely understood, English largely confined to NGO and tourism contexts, and Vietnamese also present in the trading community. For relocators, this is realistically a niche destination tied to NGO, trade, or Mekong-corridor work rather than a general expatriate base. The climate is tropical savanna with a hot dry season and a monsoon from May to October.
