Why this quality rating
Japan’s public schools are orderly, reliable, and top-tier by OECD standards.
Why the expat-access rating looks like this
Foreign resident children can often enroll, but daily schooling is in Japanese and integration can be tough without strong language support.
❓ Homeschooling
Compulsory but flexibleJapan requires parents to ensure children attend school, but there is no punishment for non-attendance. "Futoko" (school refusal) is recognized and supported with alternative education centers. Homeschooling exists in a gray area but is increasingly accepted. No formal framework.

Healthcare
System strength, outcome signals, facility coverage, and self-pay visibility in Japan.
Method: country metrics come from public system indicators, facility coverage reflects mapped providers we can inventory, direct pricing only reflects observed self-pay pages, and relative care cost can fall back to broad cost-of-living healthcare indices. Sparse pricing does not imply sparse healthcare availability.

About Ōita
Oita is the capital of Oita Prefecture on the eastern coast of Kyushu, Japan, sitting on Beppu Bay with the Inland Sea opening to the north. The local economy is built on heavy industry, particularly steel through the Nippon Steel works and petrochemicals along the coastal industrial belt, alongside a strong onsen-tourism hinterland centered on nearby Beppu and Yufuin. Relocators get Japan-grade infrastructure including the Nippoo and Hohi rail lines and Oita Airport, a humid subtropical climate that is milder than Honshu's main cities, and noticeably lower rents than Fukuoka or any Kansai metro. The trade-offs are a Japanese-language-dominant labor market, a smaller foreign professional community than Fukuoka or Hiroshima, and a more conservative regional culture.
