About Choloma
Choloma is a city in the Sula Valley of northern Honduras, immediately north of San Pedro Sula along the Pan-American highway toward Puerto Cortés. It functions as a major manufacturing satellite of San Pedro Sula, with the local economy built on apparel and electronics maquiladora plants in the free-trade zones that fan out across the Sula Valley, producing primarily for the U.S. market. The labor force is heavily female and young, drawn from across northern Honduras. Choloma has also been one of the cities most affected by the gang-related violence that has driven significant outward migration from northern Honduras. For foreigners, presence is largely tied to manufacturing and humanitarian work. Climate is tropical with a hot wet season and short cooler dry months.
