About Kisangani

Kisangani is the third-largest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with about 1.18 million residents at the upstream limit of navigation on the Congo River, roughly 1,700 kilometers northeast of Kinshasa. Historically known as Stanleyville under Belgian colonial rule, it is the principal river-port city of the country's northeastern interior and the cultural reference point of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. The local economy combines river trade, gold mining, and agriculture. Climate is tropical rainforest with consistent heat and rainfall year round. Relocators should weigh that Kisangani is reachable practically only by river or by air: roads connecting it to the rest of the country are degraded, French is the working language, and foreign presence is mission and humanitarian.
